FREUD, Sigmund (1856–1939)
Zur Psychopathologie des Alltagslebens. (Über Vergessen, Versprechen, Vergreifen, Aberglaube und Irrtum). Berlin: S. Karger, 1904.

First edition in book form of Freud’s Psychopathology of Everyday Life, the work most closely associated with the popular notion of the “Freudian slip.” Applying psychoanalytic method to the ordinary disturbances of daily life, Freud argued that forgetting, slips of the tongue, slips of the pen, misreadings, bungled actions, superstition, and error were not merely accidental or meaningless lapses, but could disclose unconscious motives and conflicts.

The work first appeared in 1901 in the Monatsschrift für Psychiatrie und Neurologie; the present S. Karger publication is the first separate book edition, issued as a revised printing from that periodical text.

Its rapid early reception is reflected in a 1906 review in The Journal of Abnormal Psychology, which treated the book as an extension of Freud’s investigations into dreams and the unconscious.

Rare in commerce; according to Rare Book Hub records, the first book edition has appeared at auction only four times in the last twenty years and only eight times since 1979.
