About Us

About Atelier Zweig

"Collecting is itself an act of creation."

Chapter I

The Vessels of Memory

At Atelier Zweig, we believe that books, manuscripts, works of art, and historical objects are more than witnesses to history. They are vessels through which ideas, beauty, and memory travel across generations.

What survives is therefore not a matter of chance, but of choice. Every manuscript, every book, every work of art that reaches us today has done so because someone, somewhere, decided it was worth preserving.

To become a collector is therefore not simply to preserve the past. It is a way of participating in, and becoming part of, history itself.

Chapter II

The Philosophy of Stefan Zweig

Stefan Zweig
STEFAN ZWEIG / BEWAHRER

Stefan Zweig understood this better than most. Although celebrated as one of the twentieth century's most beloved writers, Zweig was also among Europe's most passionate collectors. Throughout his life, he refined not only his remarkable collection, but also his ideas of what to collect and why. It is these ideas that Atelier Zweig is built upon, as both an homage to and a continuation of his philosophy.

He developed a desire to grasp what he regarded as the most secret moment of all: the moment of creation. Drawing on Goethe, Zweig believed that one cannot fully understand a work of art merely by encountering its finished form. To truly understand it, one must also understand the process by which it came into being.

"Goethe described history itself as 'the mysterious workshop of God.'"

Zweig's lifelong fascination was with the rare moments when that workshop became briefly visible: those extraordinary instances in which human imagination, courage, genius, or vision enters the world and leaves a lasting mark upon it.

The collector does not merely preserve the manifestations of these moments. The collector safeguards their continued life.

Zweig never viewed himself as the permanent owner of the objects he collected. He considered himself only a Bewahrer in der Zeit — a custodian within time. His ambition was that his collection should be preserved, enriched, studied, and above all, used.

Atelier Zweig was founded by Oda Victoria Reitan and Elian Pres-Gurwits, bringing together backgrounds in entrepreneurship, art, and art history. It seems fitting that our story began in Vienna, the city where Stefan Zweig was born and where his enduring belief in culture, collecting, and the life of the mind first took shape.

Today, Atelier Zweig is based in Los Angeles but operates between the two continents, with a European base in Norway. In many ways, this transatlantic perspective lies at the heart of our work, as many of the names and works that pass through our hands belong to a shared transatlantic story. Books, like ideas, rarely remain in one place. They travel: between languages, cultures, collections, and continents, carried by the currents of history. We are proud to continue building that bridge — not only between Europe and America, but also between traditions and generations.

We believe that collecting is one of the most meaningful ways to engage with our shared intellectual and cultural heritage.

But the world of yesterday endures only because each generation chooses what is worth carrying into tomorrow.
