Notes
FIRST EDITION of Schleiermacher’s sermon for the tercentenary of the Reformation, preached in Berlin’s Dreifaltigkeitskirche on 1 November 1817. The jubilee followed the royal decree of 27 September 1817 uniting the Lutheran and Reformed congregations of Prussia, and Schleiermacher, newly elected president of the Berlin synod, had celebrated the first joint communion of the two confessions with the Lutheran Philipp Marheineke. Here he turns the occasion into a charge on parents and teachers to bring the gifts of the Reformation to the young, on Matthew 18:5-6. In February 1818 he asked August Twesten to send a copy, with a conciliatory letter, to Claus Harms in Kiel during the dispute over Harms’s theses. Schleiermacher was born in Breslau, and this copy comes from the duplicate stock of the city’s university library.
Bound with the third part of the wartime Keiper reprint of Zarathustra (not the 1884 first edition), issued in four parts with facsimiles of Nietzsche’s manuscripts in the series Dokumente zur Morphologie, Symbolik und Geschichte.
Wrappers chipped, soiled and sunned, text toned. Good.
Provenance
