An Art Nouveau Binding from Edwardian London

BYRON, George Gordon, Lord (1788–1824). Poetry of Byron. Chosen and arranged by Matthew Arnold. London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1901.

An exceptionally attractive turn-of-the-century volume in a decorative half-vellum binding, with ivory vellum, sage-green cloth, gilt floral ornament heightened with red, and fully gilded edges. The front flyleaf bears the stamp of Truslove & Hanson, the fashionable London booksellers of 6 Sloane Street.

Edition & Bibliographic Information

Macmillan's Golden Treasury Series. The 1901 reprint of Matthew Arnold's selection, first published in 1881, as recorded on the verso of the title page.

With an engraved illustration of Byron's seated statue on the title page, protected by a tissue guard. Printed by R. & R. Clark, Limited, Edinburgh.

Arnold arranged the selection into four sections: Personal, Lyric, and Elegiac; Descriptive and Narrative; Dramatic; and Satiric. The collection includes poems and passages from Byron's major works, including Childe Harold's Pilgrimage and Don Juan.

Physical Description & Binding

Decorative half vellum over sage-green cloth-covered boards, with vellum corners and fine gilt rules. The spine is ornamented with elongated gilt stems and stylized flowers, their centres picked out in red, with a larger central gilt floral motif. Contrasting tan title label lettered in gilt. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers in complementary shades of green, rose, cream, and grey.

Very good, subject to confirmation of the binding's structural soundness. Light surface soiling, occasional marks, and minor wear to the vellum and cloth. Gilt spine decoration and page edges remain bright. Noticeable foxing to the opening blanks and preliminary leaves, with lighter scattered spotting to the half-title, tissue guard, and title page. The text leaves examined are substantially cleaner and well preserved, with occasional minor marks and light age-toning. Marbled endpapers remain attractive.

The binding's flowing botanical ornament is characteristic of the Art Nouveau aesthetic that flourished around the turn of the twentieth century. The restrained palette and the contrast between the ivory vellum and green cloth give the volume its distinctive appearance.

Truslove & Hanson of Sloane Street

The upper margin of the front flyleaf bears the stamp "TRUSLOVE & HANSON, 6 SLOANE ST. S.W."

Established in 1893, Truslove & Hanson operated in London's fashionable Sloane Street book trade and was associated with the supply of finely bound literary works. Decorative bindings bearing the firm's name are recorded from the same period.

The stamp associates this copy with the firm, although it does not conclusively establish which workshop executed the binding.

Matthew Arnold's Byron

When Matthew Arnold first published his selection in 1881, he approached Byron as one of the central figures of English Romantic poetry. In his preface, Arnold placed Byron alongside Wordsworth among the defining poets of the earlier nineteenth century.

His selection brings together Byron's personal and elegiac verse, narrative poetry, dramatic passages, and satire, offering a Victorian critic's interpretation of the poet's achievement.

This 1901 printing preserves Arnold's selection in a particularly decorative binding, reflecting the enduring appeal of Byron's poetry at the beginning of the twentieth century.
