Condition: Fine copy of this signed limited deluxe issue. Vellum spine lightly and evenly toned, as usual; boards clean and bright. Gilt edges bright, with only a minute rub at one corner. Text fresh and clean throughout, with no ownership marks. Slipcase clean and sound with minimal shelfwear. Boldly signed by Salvador Dalí in graphite on the limitation leaf. A remarkably well-preserved example.
History & Legacy
Originally published in 1944, Hidden Faces represents Dalí’s most ambitious literary undertaking—a surrealist novel set against the backdrop of pre-war Europe, where themes of love, decadence, and catastrophe unfold with the same theatrical intensity that defines his visual art. The present edition, published in London by Peter Owen in 1973, features a revised translation and introduction by Haakon Chevalier.
Limited to 100 copies, this example is designated an Artist’s Copy (out of series), placing it outside the numbered limitation and among the most desirable states of the edition. It is complete with the separate 20-page Postface booklet, including Objective Chance and Reverie, not present in the trade issue.
