The memoir that sold 20,000 copies in its first week.
Third impression, November 1929, with the text reset after Siegfried Sassoon forced the withdrawal of his verse letter.
GRAVES, Robert (1895-1985). Good-bye to All That. An Autobiography. London: Jonathan Cape, 1929.
8vo. Portrait frontispiece, six plates and a double-page folding plate, erratum slip. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt (spine darkened and soiled, extremities rubbed). Third impression, November 1929.
Notes
Graves’s account of his schooling and of the Western Front sold 20,000 copies in its first week. Six days before publication Siegfried Sassoon threatened an injunction over the inclusion of his verse letter of July 1918, and Cape withdrew it. Fewer than a hundred copies of the first state are thought to survive. In this impression the text was reset at pp. 290 and 341 and reads without the asterisks of the second state.
Spine darkened and soiled, extremities rubbed. Very good.
